Red nose, blue nose? What does it all mean?

If you've been involved in the world of pit bulls for more than five minutes, you've probably heard the terms "red nose" or "blue nose" thrown around.

Here's some facts about nose and coat colors -

Nose/coat color is NOT a specific breed or type of Pit Bull. There is only one "Pit Bull" - the American Pit Bull Terrier. Colors are not breeds.

No color is more rare or valuable than another. Yet for some reason, unscrupulous backyard breeders pump out "blue" puppies by the thousands (and sell them for thousands) to a general public who doesn't realize that blue dogs are not more rare or special than any other color - in fact, they're dying in shelters, just like all other Pit Bulls.

On another note, blue is not a common color for purebred APBTs. In all of the bully breeds, blue is most commonly seen in the American Bully, a breed separate from Pit Bulls that is still in development.

Blue is not really "blue". Blue is a dilution of black. And because this dilution is a recessive gene, it's also linked with health issues such as demodex mange. Furthermore, since it's only a dilution, "blue" noses can be seen in other breeds as well - and so can red noses - check out the Husky to the right! Nose colors aren't pit bull specific - and you wouldn't hear someone talking about their "Red-nose Husky"!

Color does not dictate temperament. We have heard some bizarre rumors about red, brindle, you-name-it-colored Pit Bulls being more aggressive - these are unfounded, untrue statements with no scientific evidence to support it.
